HoustonGuitar's Guitar Dots system is the simplest, most effective solution to learning your first chords and scales. I've been using Guitar Dots with my beginning students for more than 20 years. Now that I'm teaching lessons online, the Guitar Dots system has become even more indispensable.
If your teacher wants to teach you how to play an 'A' chord, she or he has to say, "Put your ring finger on the second string at the second fret, then put your middle finger on the third string at the second fret ..." With Guitar Dots, all I have to say is, "Put your fingers on Green." I never have to remind my students where they're supposed to put their fingers, or which notes go with which chords. The amount of time and headache this saves with each lesson, for my students and for me, is immeasurable.
You can try to get your teacher to use colored dots as a visual aid to help you learn your chords and scales - but good luck with that. I've only found a couple of other teachers who were willing to incorporate my system with their students. Most guitar teachers I've talked with about the Dots system don't like it. Some guitar teachers even hate it, saying my approach is garbage - or worse. They say I'm making things too easy, that if I was a serious teacher, I would make my students learn to read notes "like everybody else."
Every beginning student I've ever had has opted for using Guitar Dots, even the handful that resisted the idea at first. I've written at length about why, for most beginning guitar students who want to learn popular rock, country, blues or folk music, learning to read staff notation is not a productive use of their learning or practice time.
Guitar Dots usually arrive by mail in about a week or less. So if you plan to use Guitar Dots with your online lessons, please allow a week for them to arrive by mail (in the continental United States.)
