SS01 Alternate Picking the Form 1 Major Scale – Multi-picking exercises
[Improve Your Alternate Picking – Be More Relaxed!]
INTRO
One of the most important things you can do to develop pro level guitar skills is to develop a smooth and relaxed picking style.
This video looks at alternate picking on the Form 1 Major Scale. We’ll break the Form 1 Major scale down into smaller pieces, and we’ll practice to a drum track. We’ll also look at an easy alternate picking exercise you can apply to any scale that will help you develop a more relaxed alternate picking style.

The first key to developing a smooth, even picking sound, with a relaxed, secure feel is to get completely comfortable with alternate picking.
That includes string crossing. You want to be able to cross to any adjacent string on either an up stroke or a down stroke.
We’re going to apply alternate picking to the Form 1 Major scale, one of the main go-to scales for improvising guitar players. We’ll break it down into pairs of strings.
When you’re done with this video, you should be an expert at alternate picking the Form 1 major scale. Then you can apply this same practice to your other scale shapes.
Getting a relaxed feel for scales and single line picking will help you develop a relaxed feel for alternate picking over chords. We’ll look at that in another video.

MULTIPICKING The idea is that your right hand is working more than your left. Don’t rush to get faster. The reason for picking multiple times is so your right hand can get the feel of picking a particular string.
TITLE It isn’t about speed, it’s about the feel … learn to relax.
The reason this is also a a sort of speed exercise for your left hand is that even though your left hand doesn’t move fast, you have to move quickly, at exactly the right time.
